Written By
Rick Ellis, May 14th, 2001
Here's a first
look at some of the movies and miniseries that will air this fall
on NBC. We'll fill it all in with more photos and info as they are
released. The following info is directly from the network press
release, so expect a bit of promotion mixed in with the information:
UPRISING
This
riveting, four-hour miniseries depicts for the first time the heroic
true stories of Jewish resistance fighters against the Nazis in
the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. Drawn from the actual accounts
of Warsaw Ghetto survivors, "Uprising" reveals the events leading
up to the battle between the brave Jewish freedom fighters and the
German forces that occupied Poland in September 1939.
A compelling
story of true heroism in the face of impossible odds, this epic
miniseries stars Oscar winner Jon Voight ("Coming Home," "Noah's
Ark"), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Donald Sutherland ("Citizen
X," "Space Cowboys"), Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Leelee Sobieski
('Joan of Arc"), two-time Emmy Award winner Hank Azaria ("Tuesdays
with Morrie," "The Simpsons"), Emmy Award nominee David Schwimmer
(NBC's "Friends"), Carey Elwes ("Twister") Stephen Moyer ("Quills")
and Mili Avital ("After the Storm"). Jon Avnet ("Up Close & Personal,"
"Fried Green Tomatoes") is the executive producer, co-writer and
director of the miniseries filmed in Bratislava, Slovakia. Paul
Brickman ("Men Don't Leave") is the co-writer; Raffaella De Laurentiis
("Backdraft") is also executive producer; and Lisa Lindstrom ("Fried
Green Tomatoes") is co-executive producer of the miniseries from
the Jon Avnet Company.
THE MATTHEW SHEPARD STORY
Oscar
nominees Stockard Channing ("Six Degrees of Separation," NBC's "The
West Wing") and Sam Waterston ("The Killing Fields," NBC's "Law
& Order") portray the parents of Matthew Shepard (Shane Meier, "Walker,
Texas Ranger"), the Laramie, Wyoming, college student who was murdered
simply because he was gay. As the only authorized account of Matthew
Shepard, the movie dramatizes Shepard's life and reveals how his
parents found the courage to forgive his killers and end the cycle
of hate following the murder that shocked and outraged the nation.
Oscar winner
Goldie Hawn ("Cactus Flower," "The First Wives Club") is an executive
producer, along with Peter Sussman and Ed Gernon ("Life with Judy
Garland: Me & My Shadows," "Joan of Arc"). Roger Spottiswoode ("And
the Band Played On …") is the director, and John Wierick ("Bopha!")
and Jacob Krueger ("Ready to Run") are the writers of this Alliance
Atlantis production in association with Cherry Alley Productions.
GROUND ZERO
In
this two-hour thriller, Katherine Heigl ("Roswell") and Kerr Smith
("Dawson's Creek," "The Forsaken") star as politically concerned
students who build a nuclear device to illustrate the need for a
change in national priorities. But when they're betrayed by a fellow
student and the bomb ends up in the hands of a terrorist, they have
to work with the government in a race against time to prevent the
destruction of the San Francisco Bay area.
Leonard Goldberg
("Charlie's Angels," "Double Jeopardy," "War Games") is the executive
producer, and Amanda Goldberg ("Charlie's Angels," "Runaway Virus")
is the producer. Eric Laneuville ("Pandora's Clock") is the director,
and writer Tom Vaughan based his script based on the bestseller
"The Seventh Power," by James Mills. The movie is from Panda Productions,
Inc. in association with NBC Studios.
