A Conversation With Sharon Lawrence

Q: What attracted you to this movie?

A: When executive producer Stan Brooks approached me about this movie, I recognized the elements that make a good thriller, which include real-life situations and realistic relationships.

Q: Tell us about your character, Corrine Maguire.

A: My character is a woman whose life is changing. She's a single mom who has had to leave her son in the care of a babysitter so she can work. And it just happens that she is the one in charge when the tornado hits the plant. And in the midst of this crises that is endangering the town, she finds out that her son is also in the track of the tornadoes. So she has to make a tough choice whether to save the town or go home and save her son.

Q: What's it like being in front of the wind machines used to create the effect of being in a tornado.

A: I'm an adrenaline junkie, so it's great. The tornado is in my body. The wind machines they are using here are incredibly powerful. They heighten the circumstances immediately. It's hard not to fel the pressure of the elements. So when I say the tornado is in my body, I mean we are breathing it and sneezing it and feeling it in every way.

Q: Do you think the situation in the this movie is plausible?

A: From what I understand, there's a very high percentage of nuclear power plants in the United States that are situated in what's called Tornado Alley. The chances of something like what happens in this movie actually happening are probably very small, but the simple fact is, it could happen.

Q: How has it been working with Mark-Paul Gosselaar?

A: I've had a great relationship working with Mark-Paul and getting to know him. We have a kind of coincidental relationship in that he is just starting on NYPD Blue, a show on which I spent many years.

Q: Why do you think people will want to watch this movie?

A: How can you resist the name "Atomic Twister?" It's "Twister" meets "The China Syndrome." People like to watch these natural disasters and see how they affect people they can identify with. It's about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

Q: Do you think this movie has a message?

A: I'm interested in the environment, so the idea that we as human beings feel that we can control our environment and harness nature certainly gives us a sense of accomplishment and control and safety. But in a lot of situations, we have to acknowledge that we don't have that control.

Q: What do you hope the audience gets out of this movie?

A: I think the audience will get a great ride that's as emotionally involving as it is thrilling.
