Ellis, Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007 The host of Food TV's series "Ace Of Cakes" talks about the new season of episodes, his staff and what it's like being followed around by cameras. Q: Going into your first season, I'm sure you had some expectations of what the show would look like and how you come off on-camera. Were you surprised by anything you saw, or see anything you just didn't remember? A: Both. We're usually working on Thursday nights, so we take a break and watch the show. I live over the bakery (Goldman owns Baltimore's 'Charm City Bakery'), and we'll all pile up there to watch the episode. It's pretty weird when you're taking a break from work to watch a show about you working. Q: You had done some TV before "Ace Of Cakes," but did the success of the show impact your personal life in any way? Are more people recognizing you on the street? A: Yeah, I get that a lot. I try and keep a low profile, but I'm a big guy with no hair, so it's a bit tough to keep people from recognizing me. Q: When you do a reality show, there's always that tension between the needs of the producers and your needs to keep working as you normally would. Has it been difficult at times having a camera crew follow you around? A: Sometimes, although I have to say that I work with really great people. Last week (this interview was done in late December), we were delivering this big castle cake and just as it was almost delivered, a woman opened the door, caught the cake with the corner of the door and it just hit the ground. Q: Wow, what did you do? A: Actually, I was on the phone with the AP (Associated Press) when they told me. I wrapped up the interview and got everyone moving. It's funny, I get bored when things are going smoothly, but I love working under pressure. We had templates for the thing, I grabbed people and pointed them in the direction where I needed them. "You do the moat, you take care of the dragon." The funny thing is that the replacement looked better than the original. Q: You're in the middle of shooting the new season's episodes. What can viewers look forward to this year? A: It's just going to be more funny stuff. Stuff that's more about us than the cakes themselves. I think people get that we're not a typical bakery, and just showing a bunch of episodes where we were banging out cakes would be boring....We end the season by doing a cake for the VIP party at the Super Bowl. Which should be a blast. Then I'm taking everyone to Mexico for some time off. Q: The "Ace Of Cakes" gang on the beach in Mexico. Now that's a cable TV series if I ever heard one. A: (laughing). I think it's more of a Spice Channel thing. Q: Okay, that's probably not a mental image of you I need in my head. A: Hey, we have some great looking women working here...(laughing). But we've been working hard, so we need to play hard. Q: You sound like a pretty great boss. A: I'm the best boss. Season two of the Food Network's "Ace Of Cakes" premieres on Thursday, January 18th, 2007. |
