11th, 2007 After 100 or so episodes on The Disney Channel's hit show "That's So Raven," Kyle Massey (who plays Corey Baxter) is starring in his own show, "Cory In The House." The new series is Disney's first spin-off series, and it's set in Washington D.C., where Cory's dad Victor (played by Rondell Sheridan) has been hired as the presidential chef for the newly elected President Martinez (John D'Aquino). I spoke with Kyle by phone this week, and we talked about the show,
his music and his golf game.
A: Oh definitely. It's like when you're going to a new school, and you're all excited to meet new people. But you still want to have your mom around to make things easier for you. I was looking forward to everything, but it was great to have Rondell around. We know each other real well, and we give each other these looks, and play off each other. Q: So what you're saying is that Rondell's a lot like your mom? A: Oh man, no. (laughing). I don't think he want to hear that. But it is great having him around and it makes things a lot easier. Q: How long did it take for you to get comfortable with the new cast and show? You know, before you were able to say to yourself "Hey, this feels real comfortable." A: Well, we had mostly the same crew (as on "That's So Raven"), and producers. And with Rondell around, it seemed more like I never left. We just brought new people into the show. I felt comfortable the whole time, and luckily everyone got comfortable pretty quickly. Q: How long did you have to rehearse with the new cast before you shot the first episode? A: Not that long. We rehearse each episode for three days, then shoot it in two, so really I had three days to get used to everyone and feel comfortable with the chemistry. Q: That must have made things a lot less stressful, once you realized that the chemistry was there and that everything was going to be okay. A: Well, yeah, going home the first day, I was saying to myself, "Oh, man, that's a relief." Q: Disney has a lot of faith in "Cory In The House." They ordered the series without even shooting a pilot. Does that put added pressure on you, or do you just do the work and not think about the business side of it? A: Well, you can't think about it. At least, you try not to. I'm not going into work and thinking "Oh man, they ordered the show without a pilot," 'cause it would drive you nuts. But I do know they're hoping it does well, and I think it's going to be fine. You just have to stay focused on what you're doing, and let the business stuff work itself out. Q: In the show, you form a band with Newt and Meena and you end up playing drums. Was that a skill that you before the show? A: I've been faking playing the drums for three years. I'm getting pretty good at looking like I can play, but I really can't. Q: So if you're at a party and someone asks you to play drums….well you're just hoping that doesn't happen. A: Yeah, that would not be a good thing. Q: Let's talk about your music for a bit. You've already recorded some tracks, including "It's A Dog" for "Life Is Ruff and the theme song for "Cory In The House." A: ...and I did the theme song for "Ying Yang Yo." Q: So is there a chance that we'll see a full CD from you sometime in the future? A: Well, I hope so. Sure, I'd like that, if someone wants me to do it. Q: Has anyone at Disney talked to you about that, or are you just waiting for the right time to announce it? A: No, if someone wanted me to do a CD, I'd be telling everybody! Q: As long as we're talking about music, what kind of stuff do you listen to? A: I like James Blount. Some hip-hop and R&B. I listen to more
mellow stuff, usually. Q: You're an avid golfer, and I wondering if you're still able to play as much as you would like with your busy schedule? A: I still try and play as much as I can, mostly on weekends. But it is great having the show, because I get to play in the celebrity golf tournaments. Q: And that's great because no one expects you to be any good. A: Yeah, and we get stuck in these groups with a celebrity and a pro and I'm thinking, "Hey, I'm a celebrity, but I'm a pro, too!" Q: Let's talk a bit about some of the cast from your new show. Tell us a little about Jason (Dolley, who plays "Newt Livingston III"). A: He and I get along great. We have a good chemistry on and off screen. He does a great job of playing a dumb guy. Q: I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that. A: (laughing) Nah, I didn't mean it THAT way. Q: Even though I've just seen two episodes, I can tell that Madison (Pettis, who plays Presidential daughter Sophie Martinez) is going to really terrorize you. A: Oh man, she's there to make my life miserable. And she does. She just terrorizes Cory, and everyone else thinks she's some perfect kid. Q: So really, she's there to be Cory to your Cory. A: Yep, that's pretty much her job. And she seems to really enjoy it. Q: So how many episodes of the show have you shot so far? A: We've done 18….19. We're pretty far into the season. Q: Is there any episode so far that stands out in your mind? Any favorite moments? A: Honestly, there are so many. It's hard to pick one or two. We just shot one where Stickler uses this device that makes me loose my rhythm, which messes up the band. I get hung up with a live bear. Raven visits and I end up wearing one of her dresses. In another episode I wear a lobster outfit. There are just a lot of fun things to look forward to. "Cory In The House" premieres on the Disney Channel on Friday, January 11th, 2007.
