Nick Lea might be best known to TV audiences for his memorable role as Alex Krycek on "The X Files." But he has guested on a number of other shows, from "CSI" to "Men In Trees."

Lea is currently co-starring in the ABC Family drama "Kyle X/Y," where he plays the mysterious Tom Foss.

I recently spoke with him by phone about the show, and the upcoming DVD release of the first season.

Q: Let's talk a bit about how you joined the show. What did you think when you first read the script?

A: Overall, I was really impressed with the script when I read it. I'm drawn to stories that have a sense of mystery and imagination. I like shows that have a heart and deal with real emotions.

Q: Did you have any sense of where the first season was going to end up when you agreed to do the show?

A: Not specifically, but I wanted to know where the show was going-especially when it came to my character. In the first three of four episodes, Thomas Foss basically just drives around in a truck. I needed to know that I was going to be doing more than that, and the producers gave me enough to make me comfortable with my future on the show.

Q: Were you surprised by the direction your character moved by the end of the season?

A: Well, I didn't know all the details, but I did know that my character was going to be more of a heroic figure than you might have suspected from the beginning of the season. There was a lot of apparent duplicity that was going to play out through the season. And that was a compelling storyline for me. I have always enjoyed playing characters that find their heroism as the story evolves.

Q: The show is shot in the Vancouver area, and that's also where you're living with your family. Did that help to make the show more attractive to you?

A: Definitely. I really enjoy living here, it's a good place for my family, I have friends and a life here. I've tried to balance the need to be close to them with my career, so I try and alternate between things that shoot here, and things where I have to be away. This show is funny, though, because "Kyle X/Y" doesn't air here (in Canada). So friends of mine will ask what I'm working on, and they have no idea what I'm talking about when I mention the show.

Q: Do you have any favorite episodes from season one?

A: I was watching the finale on DVD a couple of nights ago, and I have to say the episode turned out amazingly well. It's really a great piece of storytelling, and it's very entertaining. I think it really sets up the new season very well for viewers.

Q: You also work a lot in feature films. DO you have a preference between acting in a TV series or a film?

A: With either one, it really gets down to the quality of the story. In both, I've done good ones and bad ones. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to distinguish between the two until it's too late (laughing).

Q: How does working on "Kyle X/Y" compare to working on "The X-Files." I suspect there's definite;y a difference in the budget.

A: Yeah, quite a bit of difference. After the first couple of seasons, shooting "The X-Files" was almost like working on a movie. There was money and time to really spend on each individual scene. "Kyle X/Y" is more like a small, independent film. We move quickly on the show, and there isn't much time for experimentation. But we have a great cast and crew, and I think the final results are pretty impressive.

Q: I know you can't say much about the upcoming season, but can you give the audience any hints about what they can expect?

A: You're right, I can't say too much. But I can say that my character is going to be moving more to the forefront of the show. There are some secrets which will be revealed, and…..well, that's all I can say.
