Political reporters and pundits tend to fall back on some familiar themes and comments when they just can't figure out what else to say.

Viewers are going to see and hear a lot of that today during the day-long election coverage. So rather than simply tuning out the mindless chatter, why not make that predictable commentary the basis of a drinking game? Because in the end, what's more American than combining patriotic behavior with a lot of alcohol.

If you plan on watching MSNBC today, feel free to take a drink everytime you hear on the following phrases or comments.

Odds are you'll be sleeping before the polls close in California.

Take a drink if:

Anyone uses the phrase "pathway to victory"

Joe Scarborough starts a sentence with the phrase "As I predicted.."

Keith Olbermann mentions the "Keith number"

Anyone describes Sarah Palin as "the future face of the Republican Party"

They follow up that description with a comment on how cute she looks.

Pat Buchanan mentions the Nixon presidential campaign

Chris Matthews mentions the Kennedy presidential campaign

Joe Scarborough mentions his own congressional campaign

Keith Olbermann mentions his fondness for the 2000 campaign version of John McCain

Rachel Maddow says she generally agrees with Pat Buchanan's assessment, then follows the comment up with an explanation of the many ways she doesn't agree

Any Republican strategist blames a McCain loss on the bad economy

Any Democratic strategist blames an Obama loss on vote suppression

Anyone mentions "Saturday Night Live"

The mention is followed with a clip from the show.
