Saturday's
Profiler was a two-hour episode and it was the first show
in the new bunch. The staff changed a bit after last week's show,
with Lawrence Hertzog (Nowhere
Man)leaving to do another show and some other changes
were made as well. Last week's episode "The House that Jack Built"
was written by Hertzog, and it gave a preview of this week's action-packed
episodes.
"Shadow
of Angels" had two plots interwoven together. The group was hot
on the trail of "Jack", while at the same time investigating a
series of macabre, inventive murders.
I like the fact the action has picked up some. Finally, the FBI
seem like an actual police agency. Some of the early episodes
were all attitude--just an hour of Ally Walker stumbling around
looking dewey-eyed.
They've also beefed up the enesemble, and several of the parts
(Roma Maffia, Peter Frenchette)are turning into intergral roles.
On the downside, they've added A. Martinez's "Coop" as a regular
cast member, and I don't really buy either the relationship or
his role in the taskforce.
When we first met him, he was a local bomb squad guy--very good
in his job, but he certainly had no leadership ability. Suddenly,
in this episode, he's leading SWAT teams and pulling information
out of the air. It just feels as if they're trying to make him
more than he is--because they need to rationalize his addition
onto the team.
Overall, though...I enjoyed the two hours, even if it did take
the team *way* too long to figure out that this guy may not really
be Jack. But James Coburn had a meaty, if small role as the patriarch
of a twisted family. Watching him makes me wonder why they don't
offer him a series. You may not want to build a series around
him..but he'd be a great asset in a small ensemble.
There will be additional changes in the upcoming weeks. NBC has
been pressuring the producers to focus more on the personal lives
of the task force members--and you'll be seeing more of that.
I'm not convinced that this shift is a paticularly bright idea,
since Sam's personal life is the least vibrant and interesting
part of the show. And while I enjoy the acting of Robert Davi,
I'm not ready to see him as a love interest.
