29th
Annual American Music Award Winners

The American
Music Awards are always a bit quirky. They're generally a goofy
mix of sincere, fairly unhip artists, a few performers a bit past
their prime and a scattering of artists that matter. There aren't
a lot of surprises and the thing always seems to run an hour too
long.
Last night's
three-hour show wasn't much different. Co-hosts Jenny McCarthy
and Puff Daddy/P. Diddy seemed ill-matched. McCarthy was certainly
funny enough, but her voice kept getting higher and higher throughout
the show until it finally reached a tone that only dogs can hear.
As for Mr. Diddy...well...creepy comes to mind. He certainly gets
the award for the most shameless use of God, when he publicly
thanked the Lord for getting him through last year's brush with
the law.
Luther Vandross's
tribute to George Harrison was probably the best live performance,
and the worst goes to Britney Spears. Her rendition of "I'm
Not A Girl," somehow managed to only hit about a third of
the correct notes, despite the help from two flanking background
singers. And the award for the most supportive boyfriend goes
to Justin Timberlake, who jumped to his feet following the end
of the Spears tune, yelling his love for her performance.
