The U.S.A. prevailed Thursday at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards in Stockholm, Sweden. Fellow Michiganders Madonna and Eminem each nabbed a pair of honors leaving most of the European nominees out in the cold. Madonna took home awards in Best Female and Dance categories while the Motor City rapper was recognized for Best Hip-Hop and Best Album (The Marshall Mathers LP).

Other countrymen who took home statues were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, for Best Rock Act, Backstreet Boys for Best Group and Blink-182 for Best New Act -- a shock, since they've been around since 1993. Moby picked up Best Video while a scantily dressed Jennifer Lopez snagged Best R&B and Ricky Martin was named Best Male Artist.

As for the Euro-contingent, Robbie Williams, who usually cleans up at European awards shows, was nominated in five categories but only took home a single award: Best Song ("Rock DJ"). Nicole Appleton's band All Saints won Best Pop, beating out Williams (Appleton's ex), Britney Spears, 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, while the record setting Westlife -- with their string of seven number one hits on the UK single chart -- took the Best UK & Ireland act.

The Spice Girls went home empty-handed, giving credence to rumors that their appearance at the MTV awards would be their last live performance.

The show was hosted by Wyclef Jean, who opened the show with a rap collage set to Abba's "Dancing Queen."

Other performers included U2, Madonna (sporting a Kylie Minogue T-shirt), Williams and the aforementioned Minogue. Lopez previewed her new single "Love Don't Cost A Thing" after flying over the audience in a faux airplane while newly long-tressed Ricky Martin closed the bash with his recent hit "She Bangs."
