The Canadian newspaper National Press has an early review of “Cashmere Mafia,” and to be kind, it’s a mixed review.
Swatches of Cashmere feel stitched together from remnants of Sex and the City (four successful women in NYC gather in a restaurant to compare life notes), it veers into cliché (harried working woman deals with kids as she rushes out the door) and the ostensible star, Lucy Liu, is muted, for some reason. Though she does get to wear cute outfits.
Pre-production of ABC’s upcoming power-list-women drama “Cashmere Mafia” was halted due to its Queens soundstage getting flooded from New York’s recent torrential downpour.
ABC estimates production should be up and running again in a week, though sources say it might take a little longer. According to the network, the delay will not impact the premiere date.
CNN Money has an interesting piece on the number of new TV shows that are filming in New York City. It mentions “Canterbury’s Law” in passing:
Shooting television in New York was complicated by several factors: the weather, the lack of comprehensive infrastructure, and the availability of cheaper union talent in passable doppelgängers such as Toronto. (That and the fact that the lion’s share of the film and TV industry is situated 3,000 miles to the left.)
The weather has not changed in 20 years, but the increase in production facilities and the 15 percent tax rebate have mitigated logistical difficulties and the cost of U.S. talent. Technology has also bridged the geographical divide, allowing network and studio executives to view dailies online. “The tax incentive definitely helps us,” said Hall, whose studio is producing Canterbury’s Law, Cashmere Mafia, and Damages. “But, creatively, we had to have them based in New York.”
Lourdes Benedicto (The Nine, 24) will play the love interest for Bonnie Somerville’s character Caitlin.
Benedicto’s character, Alicia, was originally described in the casting sides as “37, British, with a striking physical beauty made all the more appealing by a disarmingly scattered, un-self-conscious air. Men want to be with her, women want to be like her.”
In the pilot, Caitlin, a cosmetics-industry VP, interviews and hires Alicia, and unexpectedly finds herself attracted to her. At dinner one night after working late, the two women kiss — and Caitlin’s world turns upside down.
The AfterEllen Blog has a look at an excerpt from the pilot of “Cashmere Mafia.”
This particular excerpt hints at a lesbian storyline for one of the the characters.
EXT. TOWN BAR AND RESTAURANT–NIGHT
Music continues, over and under. Caitlin and Alicia walk out together, lit up with drinks and laughing. Caitlin’s Jaguar is waiting at the curb.
CAITLIN
Can I drop you?ALICIA
I’m meeting my brother for dinner in Brooklyn.
I’ll just take a taxi…
A shy, charged shuffle; Caitlin takes her gently by the elbows and brushes a kiss to both cheeks.
CAITLIN
This was fun. Good night…
But as she steps back, Alicia catchers her eye with a challenging, mischievous, unmistakably erotic look and Caitlin’s breath catches–
–and Alicia steps up and kisses her full on the mouth. And they melt together in a shyly passionate little shuffle right there on the sidewalk–
–as Cilla Grey [an adversary] passes by on her way in, recognizing Caitlin with a look of surprise, quickly turning away and disappearing inside, unnoticed by Caitlin. The kiss ends.
