Synopsis: The greatest stars in U.S. figure skating
history gather to mark the 40th anniversary of the plane crash that
killed the entire U.S. National team on its way to Prague for the World
Championships. ABC Sports Presents A Skating Tribute (The Legacy of
the 1961 U.S. World Team), SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 (2:00-4:00 p.m., ET),
on the ABC Television Network
COMMENTATORS: Terry Gannon, Dick Button, Peggy
Fleming and Peter Carruthers provide all the commentary from Madison
Square Garden in New York City.
THE EVENT: This memorable evening of figure skating
will feature a lineup of stars spanning U.S. figure skating history,
from current and four-time World champion Michelle Kwan to 1984 Olympic
champion Scott Hamilton. Also skating are 1998 Olympic champion Tara
Lipinski, 1994 Olympic silver medalist Nancy Kerrigan, 1996 World and
five-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge, 1988 Olympic champion Brian Boitano
and 1992 Olympic and two-time World champion Kristi Yamaguchi. In all
there are four Olympic champions, nine former and current World champions
and 21 U.S. champions who will perform.
In the wake of the September 11th tragedy, there will
also be a special performance from 16-year-old Joanna Glick who will
skate in memory of her brother, Jeremy, who was killed when United flight
93 crashed in Pennsylvania. Jeremy, 31, from West Milford, New Jersey,
was one of the passengers believed to be instrumental in helping to
bring the hijacked plane down outside of Pittsburgh.
Broadway star and recording artist Linda Eder will perform
"America the Beautiful," and will also perform her song "Gold" while
Kristi Yamaguchi skates.
Proceeds from the event will enhance and enable the United
Stated Figure Skating Association Memorial Fund which supports skaters
of the future. Additionally the USFSA will make a donation to the September
11th Fund to assist the ongoing efforts in New York, Washington, DC,
and Pennsylvania.
1961 U.S. WORLD TEAM: On February 15, 1961, Sabena
Flight 548, travelling from New York to Brussels, crashed in Berg-Kampenhout,
Belgium, claiming the lives of all 72 passengers on board. Included
were all 18 members of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team and 16
of their friends, family and coaches en route to the 1961 World Figure
Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
ABC Sports will present a touching feature looking back
at the 40th anniversary of the plane crash. The feature focuses on how
the U.S. skating community, with the help of the Memorial Fund, nurtured
new champions and rebuilt the sport.
