Synopsis: A holiday celebration offers an opportunity to heal
old wounds for an estranged family on the mend.
Britt Calhoun (Emmy winner Dana Delany, China
Beach) is a struggling Los Angeles artist and single
mother who wants to live by her own rules.
What her baby's father, Nicholas (Robert Bauer), wants is to reconcile
with Britt, marry her, and have a "normal" life. But to her,
the image of an all-American family is an illusion-one fostered by her
own troubled family, living miles away and lifetimes apart. When Britt's
older sister Valetta (Megan Gallagher, The
Larry Sanders Show) calls with the news that the
Calhouns are reuniting for Thanksgiving, she resists. As the black sheep
of the clan, she's neither forgiven nor forgotten the volatile relationship
with her well-manicured, socialite mother Maggie (Doris Roberts, Everybody
Loves Raymond), a wealthy widow who's devoted her life
to keeping up appearances.
However, Britt knows that if she's ever to have a productive future,
she must come to terms with the past. With her son in tow, she returns
home, hoping that things have changed. What she finds among her estranged
siblings and in-laws is a family still in denial, still in turmoil,
and still using silence as weapon. Into this brittle atmosphere erupts
a startling revelation-Maggie is in the early stages of Alzheimer's.
Afraid and suddenly vulnerable after all these years, Maggie indeed
wants to reconcile with Britt, get to know her grandson, answer Britt's
challenging questions about the past, and finally understand her daughter.
On the eve of this illuminating Thanksgiving, Britt will not only come
to know her family for the first time in her life, but to finally understand
herself as well.
From Alpine Medien, directed by John Putch (Grounded
for Life), comes a revelatory film about the truth and
beauty of family that will resonate with anyone who ever wanted to belong
and to be loved.
