Guide: The Chair

Synopsis:
In
"The Chair," famed tennis player John McEnroe -- a player famed
for his intensity and relentless pursuit of perfection -- will
present contestants with the ultimate test in self-control, as
they are quizzed on national television while attached to a heart
monitor. A contestant who can answer correctly without his base
heart rate exceeding a pre-determined range will win big money
and stay in the game. But if he can't keep his emotions in check
and his heart rate in line, his winnings will slowly disappear,
all as McEnroe oversees the challenge.
In this series,
contestants must not only answer a range of challenging questions,
but must control their bodies and emotions under real pressure.
Up to eight contestants per episode will be eligible to take a
turn in the hot seat.
Prior to each
taping, contestants undergo a three-hour test to determine their
resting heart rates. From that test, they are then given a range
in which their rate can fluctuate during the game. Those who make
it to the chair are then asked to answer general knowledge questions
while strapped to a heart-monitoring device.
If a contestant
answers the questions correctly - and if his heart rate stays
within the prescribed range - his money increases and the round
continues. But if a contestant loses his cool and his heart races
out of control, the money he's already won will be lost, as his
total goes backwards.
A contestant
will also be unable to answer any new questions until his heart
rate returns to the predetermined range. His time in the chair
will end when he answers a question incorrectly - or if his prize
winnings run out. In addition to the questions, surprises throughout
the show will also catch the contestants off guard, further testing
their ability to remain calm under the intense spotlight.
