Show Guide: Cleopatra 2525

Written by Rick Ellis, December 29th, 1999

Set more than five centuries in the future, Cleopatra 2525 revolves around the exploits of three tough and beautiful women in a world that has literally been turned upside down. Monstrous heavily-armored airborne creatures known as the Bailies rule the surface of the Earth and humanity has been driven underground in order to survive.

Over centuries of Bailey domination, mankind's subterranean universe has grown into an immense labyrinth of shafts, corridors and spaces on countless levels within the Earth. Housed on these levels are distinctly different worlds, ranging from beautifully simulated surface environments to toxic waste dumps. The human populations inhabiting these domains have evolved independently over hundreds of years, giving rise to a vast array of diverse cultures in the underground grid.

With the passing of generations, life in this complex netherworld has become increasingly chaotic. Frightening part-human part-animal mutants have proliferated through uncontrolled genetic experimentation. Mercenaries troll the unstable levels looking for opportunities to cash in on the black market. Bailey-engineered Betrayer robots, outwardly indistinguishable from humans, live secretly among the people at the beck and call of their masters.

Though most of humanity has abandoned hope of ever reclaiming the surface of the Earth, there are individuals within the subterranean world still fiercely committed to that cause. Among these brave souls are the female warriors Hel and Sarge.

Gina Torres plays Hel, a heroic fighter whose family has perished in the struggle for a better life. A smart and courageous leader, she spearheads dangerous operations against the Bailies and Betrayers, guided by a mysterious Voice she receives through an implant in her jaw. Battling at her side is the gung ho warrior Sarge, played by Victoria Pratt. A fearless fighter with awesome combat skills, Sarge has escaped a dark past by joining forces with Hel, who has given her life a renewed sense of purpose.

In the series premiere, Hel and Sarge set out on a daring mission that takes them to the planet's surface for a brief but perilous encounter with a Bailey. As they flee under ground, Sarge is wounded by a Betrayer. Hotly pursued by the killer robot, she and Hel duck into a cryogenics lab where Hel patches her up by performing some speedy laser surgery. There they discover Cleopatra, an aspiring actress and part-time exotic dancer who suddenly awakens from a cryogenic deep freeze, having lapsed into a coma during cosmetic surgery in the year 2001.

Played by Jennifer Sky, the disoriented but plucky young Cleopatra finds herself in the midst of a fire fight when the Betrayer robot blasts his way into the lab to finish off Hel and Sarge. In the ensuing battle, Cleopatra's acting skills prove unexpectedly useful, prompting the two rebel heroines to take her under their wing. As they educate her in the ways of war, she teaches them that looking good won't necessarily hurt the cause.

Using spikes, ropes and assorted high-tech gear to scale the shafts of the underworld, the women propel themselves to the various levels where their missions unfold. Recurring in their daring adventures are Mauser (Patrick Kake), the ruggedly handsome robot who equips them with the futuristic weapons and communications devices they need; Raina (Danielle Cormack), a dangerous mind control expert who escapes from a mental facility; and Creegan (Joel Tobeck), the sinister leader of a gang of mutants who is fighting to control the underground.
