Synopsis: "Monty" centers on Monty Richardson (Henry
Winkler), host of Channel 35's "Rightspeak." "Rightspeak"
is a conservative's dream come true--a forum for host Monty Richardson
to take on the Clinton Administration, politicial correctness, environmentalists,
and any faction which generally displeases him. Monty, a staunch supporter
of the First Admendment, leaves no liberal cause unturned in his attempt
to expose what he firmly believes is causing the decline of America.
The producer of "Rightspeak" is not only a woman, but an African-American
woman, Rita Simon (Joyce Guy), a fact which Monty feels the need to
point out as if to prove he is not too far right. Rita dryly puts Monty
in his place as often as she can; actually, Monty has a grudging respect
for her. Monty has a loyal sidekick, Clifford (Tom McGowan) who verges
on obsequious, though he's often the butt of Monty's jokes.
Monty is married to Fran (Kat Burton), a second-grade schoolteacher
and throughly modern woman, who, to Monty's dismay, often has no time
to cook dinner. Fran supports her husband's right to have an opinion,
but she never keep silent about her own more liberal views. Monty and
Fran have a loving relationship despite frequent disagreements.
The couple has two sons, twentyish Greg (David Schwimmer) and 14-year-old
David (David Krumholtz). Greg returns for Europe with a new girlfriend,
Geena Campbell (China Kantner) and plans to become a chef. Neither sits
well with his father, who believes that "men don't cook,"
and who takes an instant dislike to Geena after viewing her pierced
nose and hearing that she did performance art in the nude. She and Monty
conflict on almost every subject. David, meanwhile, is coping with teen
life, which includes a burgeoning interest in the opposite sex.
Monty alternately amuses and horrifies his family with his larger-than-life
antics, which provide an ongoing conflict. (Courtesy Touchstone Television,
