| Synopsis: America's favorite talking
horse started out as a hard-drinking equine in magazine short stories
by Walter Brooks. There were 28 such stories in all, which director Arthur
Lubin optioned for the TV series. His Mister Ed would recite Shakespeare
and speak Latin, but converse only with Wilbur, his architect-owner. Mr. Ed, the series was made possible, in large part, by the success of the 50's screwball comedies "Frances, the Talking Mule." Yet even with the success of those movies, Lubin faced an uphill climb getting Mr. Ed out of the gate. The networks scoffed, and were afraid audiences would laugh -- and not in the way they wanted. But TV heavy-weight George Burns was behind the project and so it's eventual success was nearly assured.
