Today's Song You Should Know: 'I Was Made For Lovin' You' By Kiss

The success of the Disco Years encouraged a number of unlikely Rock artists to add a dance beat to their music. But few of them were as unsettling to listen to as the effort by Kiss, who scored a #11 hit with the dance-tinged "I Was Made For Lovin' You." The song was from the band's seventh album and "Dynasty" had originally been planned with famed Disco producer Giorgio Moroder. But when that fell apart, the album was produced by Vini Poncia, who had worked on a number of Ringo Starr's solo albums and had recently produced the Peter Criss solo album.

"I Was Made For Lovin' You" was co-written by Poncia, Paul Stanley and Desmond Child and while the single & album were a success, the subsequent album was a bust. Billed as "The Return Of Kiss," the tour saw some dates canceled due to soft sales and it turned out to be the final tour with the original band until the 1996 Reunion Tour sixteen years later.

"I Was Made For Lovin' You" is certainly catchy but it also hasn't aged well. It's not as clunky as similar efforts like the Beach Boys single "Here Comes The Night" or the Elton John dance music. But in 2019, it's more of a fun curiosity than a song anyone would willingly put on their favorite playlist. And for what it's worth, the song is apparently loathed by Kiss frontman Gene Simmons, who said in a recent interview that he hated it because it was a "girl song":

“I hate playing that song to [this] day. Stadiums full of people jump up and down like Biblical locusts, they go nuts, with tattoos and grills on … they’re all jumping up and down and I’m going, ‘Do, do, do, do do … ’ Kill me now!"
