Netflix, Dreamworks Team Up In New Children's Programming Deal

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix are teaming up to produce 300 hours of original programming for the streaming network.

The new shows will be based on characters from Dreamworks Animation's library of animated films, including "Kung Fu Panda" and "Shrek." Several shows will also feature characters from the Classic Media library, which Dreamworks acquired in 2012. The first program under the deal will premiere in early 2014.

"This is an unprecedented commitment to original content in the internet television space," DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a statement. "Netflix is a visionary company that continues to redefine the way audiences watch television and it is a thrill to add to their growing momentum."

The multi-year deal is the largest for original first-run content in Netflix's history. But this is only the latest in a series of deals between Netflix and Dreamworks. Also coming exclusively to Netflix in the U.S. and Latin America next year will be DreamWorks Animation feature films, "The Croods," "Turbo" and 2014's "Mr. Peabody and Sherman." The two companies also announced in February that they would produce "Turbo F.A.S.T.," a new animated series based on the upcoming feature film "Turbo." The movie premieres in July, with the series coming to Netflix in December.
