Review: 'Barry'd Treasure'

We are at that point in the life cycle of reality TV shows where it's not surprising to watch a show that seems more than a bit divorced from real life. I enjoy "Duck Dynasty" and parts of "Gold Rush," but it's pretty obvious that both shows are assembled Frankenstein-like by editors and producers into what viewers see on the final air version of the episodes. Scenes are exaggerated, plot points are suggested and the personalities often seem to be as "real" as a cubic zirconia.
Still, those shows are least make a minimal amount of sense when you watch them. That's a claim that can't be made by "Barry'd Treasure," the new A&E show that seems as if it were edited by someone on acid.
The show stars Barry Weiss, who became a reality TV star on "Storage Wars," another one of those shows that appears to be more than a bit manipulated by producers. While Weiss wasn't in the early episodes, he quickly became a fan favorite. So it makes sense that A&E would give him a show of his own.
But based on the first episode of the series, it doesn't appear that anyone associated with the network or the show gave any serious thought to creating a series that would be a logical fit for the charming antique collector. Instead, the show is a collection of semi-random scenes that don't really hang together. If you want to watch a TV show where you'll end each episode thinking "What the crap was that?," then you'll love "Barry'd Treasure." But everyone else will just be annoyed that they've just wasted 30 minutes of their life on a show that seems to exist only as a vehicle for Weiss to be on camera.
The premise of the show is apparently that Weiss will go to a collector and help them sell off some unwanted parts of their collection. Because, of course, when you're dealing with prized possessions, you want a guy best known for buying old storage lockers to broker them for you.
In the pilot, Weiss is going to sell several pieces from the collection of a Pennsylvania man who seems to have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of rare sample-sized products. He brings along his good friend Kenny, who is more concerned with promoting his line of handmade pralines that in selling antiques.
Weiss takes four of the pieces and of course tries to sell them by dropping into random roadside antique shops to ask if they'd be interested in purchasing $50,000 worth of samples. Yeah, it doesn't work and along the way he meets an Amish guy, whom he proceeds to try and get a date before buying him a suit and dropping him back at his corn field.
I'd go on an explain the rest of the episode, but honestly, very little of it makes sense. It just seems to be a collection of random sketches, slapped together and edited into a hot mess of a show.
Barry Weiss is a solid reality TV personality, but no one is doing him any favors with "Barry'd Treasure," a show which is officially the worst new series of 2014. At least so far.
