Throwback Thursday: 'Breakfast Time' On FX

FX wasn't always the home of intense dramas and quirky comedies. In the 1990s the cable network was primarily a mix of off-network reruns and cheaply slapped together original shows. And by far the best of those experiments was the wonderfully odd and goofy live morning show Breakfast Time.

Breakfast Time aired on FX from June 1, 1995 to March 1, 1996. It was hosted by Tom Bergeron and Laurie Hibberd, but it also featured a strange ensemble of regulars, including a sarcastic puppet named Bob. There was also a traveling team of correspondents who would do live reports from interesting places across the country. "The Road Warriors" included a much younger Phil Keoghan (now the host of The Amazing Race), who had a memorable moment when he showed the cameras enough of his anatomy for the audience to - as Bob the Puppet quipped - see that he was indeed Jewish.

Because there wasn't much to lose, the episodes were experimental and unexpected. The series developed such a buzz that the show was eventually moved to Fox, where it was renamed Fox After Breakfast and then tinkered to death. The timeslot and much of the set and staff ended up working on the show that replaced it, a daytime talker hosted by Vicki Lawrence.

I've included a couple of pieces of footage to give you an idea of what you missed. The first clip is about ten minutes from the show's first birthday celebration. The quality isn't great, but the jokes are still hilarious. The second clip is the entire two-hour episode, which aired on August 3, 1995.
