Like most parents, I'm torn between my son's love of games and technology and my desire to encourage him to do something more productive with his time than just sit in front of the television and shoot things. Which is why I quickly realized that Minecraft is the best of both worlds. He gets to "play" and feel as if he's having a traditional gaming experience. But he's also learning how to build things, collaborate with others and use his imagination in really helpful ways.

In theory, Minecraft is pretty simple. You use blocks of various sizes and categories to build things. But it's really about building whatever world you imagine and using the materials you create to make it better. You can explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles.

There are a couple of play options available in Minecraft. Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep in Survival Mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off dangerous mobs. Do all this alone or with friends.

Minecraft is arguably the most popular game of its generation and it's an easy way for players to make friends in a safe, family friendly environment. Versions of Minecraft are available for PC's, phones and just about every tablet and gaming platform available. But my family's personal favorite is the XBox One console, which we use every day.
