Today's Song You Should Know: David Cassidy - 'Lyin' To Myself'

To 99.8% of Americans, David Cassidy was known as that guy from "The Partridge Family." He had some hits under the band's name and a couple of successful solo albums but is post-TV show recording career didn't fare nearly as well. His later recordings had some mild highlights - a U.K. hit featuring background vocals from George Michael and a 1998 track that made it into the Top 25 Adult Contemporary Charts. But most people haven't heard anything Cassidy recorded after the late 1970s.

Which is too bad, because he did record some really solid stuff in those forgotten years. His best solo effort might have been 1990's "David Cassidy" album. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 tracks on the album and the single "Lyin' To Myself" was his first Top 30 hit in eighteen years. But unfortunately for Cassidy, it was released on the Engima label, which was sold off to Capital/EMI shortly after the album's release. Leaving Cassidy without a label again just as he was set to take advantage of some well-deserved commercial success.

I picked this song because it gives a sense of what Cassidy's later recording career might have sounded like with a couple of lucky breaks. He was a talented guy who unfortunately ended up typecast as a teen idol who fronted a fictional TV band.
