Today's Song You Should Know: Bruce Springsteen - 'Man's Job'

In the canon of Bruce Springsteen albums, 1992 "Human Touch" is one of the few his fans tend to dismiss with scorn. Maybe it's because it's the first project he did without his longtime E-Street Band and/or maybe it was because Springsteen opted to release it the same day as "Lucky Town," a second new album. But part of the problem is also that the album's arrangements and production seem tentative and not quite fleshed out.

Then lone single from the album "Human Touch" eeked its way into the Top 20 and the album track "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)" has made a frequent appearance in Springsteen's live sets in the decades since its release. But the two albums (and the subsequent tour) are today just footnotes in the long legacy of the Boss.

And yet if you were lucky enough to see that "Human Touch/Lucky Town" tour, you saw hints of what Springsteen's sound might have been with a band other than the E-Streeters. The shows had a soulful, looser feel and some of the songs that didn't quite work on the album became fleshed out winners during the tour.

My favorite from that time period is "Man's Job." Curtis King was a great addition to Springsteen's sound and he's repeatedly said in interviews that he wishes he could have continued to work with King, who retired from the road to return to his Gospel music roots. "Man's Job" features vocals from Springsteen and King that almost approach a classic "shout and answer" soul style and the band in the performance below is just about perfect. It's a very different style for Springsteen, but seeing these shows makes me wish he had pursued it a little longer.

Spotify's Most-Streamed Songs Of Summer 2018

It was the plea heard around the world; "Kiki, do you love me?"

The line not only set the stage for a viral dance challenge, but served as the standout lyric of Spotify's most streamed song of the 2018 summer – "In My Feelings" by Drake. The track, from the artist’s smash double album Scorpion, streamed more than 393 million times between June 1 and August 20.

Maroon 5’s balled "Girls Like You" (featuring Cardi B) is the second most-streamed song of the summer, with about 293 million streams, and Cardi B’s "I Like It" (featuring J Balvin and Bad Bunny) came in a close third with more than 289 million streams for the same time period. (Kudos to the new mom for being behind two out of three of Summer’s biggest hits!).

Spotify's list of top summer streaming jams also includes dance tracks such as "One Kiss" by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa and "Solo" by Clean Bandit (featuring Demi Lovato)—both especially popular across Europe—as well as 5 Seconds of Summer’s pop-rock anthem "Youngblood." Ariana Grande’s track "no tears left to cry" was a mainstay on Spotify's charts throughout the summer as the singer’s lead single off Sweetener, one of August’s most anticipated albums.

Summer 2018 can also be defined by its breakout stars, perhaps most notably Juice WRLD, a 19-year-old Chicago rapper whose track "Lucid Dreams" has been a consistent presence on Spotify’s global chart for the last two months.

"Juice WRLD is undoubtedly the breakout star of the summer," says Carl Chery, Spotify’s Head of Urban Music. "His rise was one of the quickest in recent memory but his music has proven to have staying power. His knack for melodies and his willingness to be vulnerable on songs like ‘Lucid Dreams’ connected with his audience in a real way."

Latin jam "Te Boté – Remix" has also emerged as a top summer track globally, led by world stage newcomer Nio Garcia, a Puerto Rican dancer-turned-rapper (the track also features artists Casper Magico, Darrell, Ozuna, Bad Bunny and Nicky Jam). Between June 1 and August 20, "Te Boté – Remix" was the most streamed song in 9 countries, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica

"The current music landscape is much more diverse than it has ever been, and that's why we're able to witness these smash breakthroughs from an artist like Nio Garcia," says Rocio Guerrero, Spotify's Head of Global Cultures. "Songs like ‘Te Boté’ and 'Asesina' from Brytiago and Darell are connecting to listeners globally. It's not just Latin people listening —there is a captive, worldwide audience fully embracing reggaeton and Latin trap, so it's not surprising to see ‘Te Boté’ find a place at the top of the charts this summer."

Alt-Pop Song Of The Day: Parker Polhill - 'International'

One of my favorite things is that magical moment when I hear someone's music for the first time. You put on a track by some musical artist you've never listened to and suddenly, you're blown away by what you hear. You start looking around to see what else they've recorded, you spend time buried on Google trying to see what else you can learn about them.

In the case of Parker Polhill, the discovery came through a publicist. I get a lot of music pitches and I take them with a grain of salt because at the end of the day, they are getting paid to get some attention for their client. But I always end up listening to the track they're pushing because you just never know. There are thousands of tracks being released every year and I couldn't keep track of them all even if all I wrote about was music. So I listen, and in the case of Parker Polhill's "International," I'm glad I did.

Polhill was born and raised in Atlanta and has apparently been making music since he was a kid. After a brief stint as an actor (He costarred in the 2016 pilot "Makin' It"), he moved to Nashville to focus on music. He posted tracks on Soundcloud and released his first single early in 2017.

"International" is his latest single and it is a sweet slice of pop/R&B. The track has that vague acoustic calypso-esque feel and a smooth and silky vocal that would sound ideal coming from a speaker on some remote beach. Listen to it below and enjoy:

Sony Admits It Released Fake Michael Jackson Tracks

When a well-known musician dies, the sales of their music tends to increase substantially. So no one was surprised when Sony Musical Entertainment scrambled to quickly release 2010's posthumous album "Michael."

But not long after the album's release, longtime Jackson fan Vera Servoa began claiming that at least three of the album's tracks were likely recorded by a Michael Jackson sound-alike performer and released as if they had been recorded by the late singer.

Servoa eventually filed a civil suit, accusing Jackson’s longtime friends Eddie Cascio, James Victor Porte, and his production company, Angelikson Productions LLC of creating and selling music through Sony and the Jackson estate.

Both Cascio and Porte claim the songs were recorded in Cascio’s New Jersey basement in 2007. However, Serova and the entire Jackson family contested these claims. They say that despite the recordings bearing a similar sound to that of the pop legend, Michael Jackson never recorded those songs.

In court documents obtained by Karen Civil, Sony Music admitted on Wednesday to releasing the fake Michael Jackson music. The fake songs include "Monster," "Keep Your Head Up," and "Breaking News."

What is still unclear is how the album will be labeled in the future and whether people who have purchased the 2010 album will be entitled to some sort of refund.

The Best Alt-Pop Music Of 2018 (So Far)

As music genres go, the term "Alt-Pop" is mushier than most. Exactly what kind of music can be described as "Alt-Pop?" For me, it includes any song with a great hook, some vague pop feel to it and more soul/R&B than hip-hop. I lean towards those songs that sound simple at first listen and then drill into your brain so deep you can't shake them.

This Spotify list includes the best Alt-Pop songs that have been released so far in 2018. I suspect there will be a lot of artists here you're not familiar with or genres you might not normally check out. There's all variations of pop, alt-country, a sprinkling of Spanish-language tunes and some things that can't really be defined. But my goal is to create a playlist you can listen to and have it all hang together like you're listening to some radio station with an unfamiliar but really fun format.

Let me know what you think at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and I hope you'll subscribe to the playlist. It's updated on a regular basis, at least a few times a week.
