Aereo Halts New Orders In New York City, Cites Vague Capacity Issues

Aereo said on Friday that it has stopped taking orders from new customers for its service in New York City after it reached full capacity.

The company, which relies on dime-sized antennas to capture signals from about 20 local broadcast TV stations in New York, assigns each customer using the service their own antenna. It currently charges an $8 per month subscription fee

"Our team has been working overtime to add more capacity in our existing markets. As soon as additional capacity is added, new consumers will be notified that they can sign up and create an Aereo account," Aereo said in a prepared statement. The company did not disclose how many subscribers it currently has in the New York market or how many customers it has nationwide.

Last fall, CBS, NBC, Fox and other broadcasters filed a petition at the U.S. Supreme Court arguing that Aereo's service violates U.S. copyright law. Various broadcasters have also fought legal battles in several District Courts, but so far Aereo has prevailed in those arenas.
