Sen. Al Franken Thinks David Letterman Should Run For Senate

Minnesota Senator and former SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cast member Al Franken makes his first appearance on THE LATE SHOW since 2008 on Wednesday night. And according to excerpts released by CBS ahead of the broadcast, he urged Letterman to run for an open Senate seat in the host's home state of Indiana.

Franken and Letterman talked about Indiana and a recently passed "Religious Freedom" law that critics argue would allow businesses to refuse to serve individuals because they're gay.

In the segment, Letterman expressed his dismay over the situation and asked Franken for suggestions on how he could apply pressure to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and make him feel "uncomfortable."

Franken agreed that the law was a "disgrace" and mentioned that with the retirement of Republican Sen. Dan Coats, "As a matter of fact, there's an open seat there." Franken also referenced his ability to get past his show business career and become a U.S. Senator. "Look, when people come to me, young people, they say how do I become a United States senator and I say, well, do 35 or 40 years of comedy and run for the Senate. You know, it's worked every time."
