Review: 'Super Drags'

If you've ever thought to yourself, "Man, I wish someone would do an adult animated mash-up of 'Ru Paul's Drag Race' and 'Powerpuff Girls'," then have I got the show for you. 

"Super Drags" is a Brazilian-made animated series from Combo Studio that follows the exploits of three male department store employees who have a secret life as drag queen superheroes Crimson Scarlet, Cran's Sapphire and Lemon Chiffon. They battle a variety of bad guys who seek to harm the LGBTQ+ community as well as the evil drag queen Lady Elza.

The series is rated MA and the comedy is not subtle. There's a penis-shaped robot named "Dil-Do" and an unsettling number of shots featuring massive animated erections. Every episode is crammed with dozens of cultural references and dick jokes that wash across you like a tidal wave of snark.

The English-dubbed version includes vocal acting from a variety of "RuPaul's Drag Race" alum including Ginger Minj, Shangela and Trixie Matthew. And I suggest that when you watch you turn off the captions, since in typical Netflix style they seem to be based on the original audio. And in many cases, what you read won't match what you hear in English.

I'll readily admit that I'm not the target audience for "Super Drags" and I'm not sure I would have watched multiple episodes if I hadn't planned on reviewing it. That being said, I can see there would be a viewers who'll look at the series and think it's the funniest animated show since "The Simpsons." That's especially the case in episode three (out of this season's five episodes), which is entitled "The Gay Cure." In the episode, Ralph decides to attend a "gay cure" boot camp after he comes out to his father and is rejected. It's a heartfelt episode and I can see where the topic would resonate with a lot of LGBTQ viewers. It's also an episode that I wish wasn't rated MA, so that teens who need to see the episode might be more inclined to tune in.

But even though it's not in my wheelhouse, I'm glad Netflix made "Super Drags" and that it is being rolled out globally. I can appreciate the need for this kind of creative diversity while still admitting that it's not for me.
