Five Reasons To Watch Netflix This Weekend: 08/09/2013

Each Friday we pick five offerings on Netflix that you might have missed. What they all have in common is that they're under-appreciated movies and TV shows that are the perfect answer to the question "What can I watch this weekend?"

The Fall (2013)
If you've missed the Gillian Anderson you enjoyed on "The X Files," you'll love this dark and intricately written British detective series. Anderson plays a detective who specializes in the psychology of serial killers and she is at the top of her acting game in this five episode season.

Official Description: When the Belfast police are stalled in their investigation of a spate of murders, Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson is drafted to investigate. Under her lead, the team uncovers an intricate web of lives entangled by the killings.

An Invisible Sign (2010)
Jessica Alba hasn't always made the best choices when it came to movie roles. But this film isn't just sweet, it also gives the star the chance to remind audiences that underneath that beautiful exterior is a very good actress.

Official Description: When a puzzling disease devastates her beloved father, math prodigy Mona Gray deals with the pain by isolating herself from the rest of the world and turning for comfort to the reliable world of mathematics. But when she later teaches math to troubled grade school kids, Mona discovers that her gift can be a route back from her long emotional exile. Marilyn Agrelo directs and Jessica Alba stars in this adaptation of the book by Aimee Bender.

The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones (1992-1993)
This big budget TV series originally aired on ABC and it centered on the exploits of Indiana Jones during his formative teenage years. The action sequences are fun, the locations are exotic and the series is a family-friendly companion to the original Harrison Ford films. If there is a downside, it's that the episodes don't include the original wraparound segments that featured an elderly Indiana Jones (played by George Hall) reminiscing about his life as a way of introducing the episodes. Apparently Steven Spielberg thinks those segments no longer fit into the Indiana Jones canon, but they were a nice addition to the Indiana Jones timeline. The VHS and DVD releases of the series also had some segments deleted and edited, but it's not clear if these episodes have suffered the same fate.

As young Indy travels the globe in search of adventure and artifacts, he crosses paths with some of the early 20th century's most notable (and notorious) personalities, including Thomas Edison, Al Capone and Lawrence of Arabia.

Antiviral (2012)
Directed by Brandon Cronenberg (son of famed director David Cronenberg), this sci-fi film is one of those ideas you'll either love or loathe. But it didn't get much attention when it was released last year, and if you're looking to take a chance on a visually stunning movie with a unique premise, this is a good choice.

Official Description: This wild sci-fi vision imagines a freaky future where diseases caught by celebrities are put on the market for injection by their obsessed fans. Virus dealer Syd March makes a big mistake when he gives himself the same bug that killed a superstar.

Mako Mermaids: An H20 Adventure (2013)
This Netflix exclusive is an Australian TV series that is more or less a sequel to the series "H20: Just Add Water," which aired in 120 countries. While you probably haven't heard of that series, it's likely your teen daughter has and if that's the case, this series will keep her occupied for days. There are 13 episodes available for viewing now, with the rest of the season coming in September.

Official Description: This sequel to "H2O: Just Add Water" follows a boy named Zac who turns into a merman after falling into a magical Pool. Zac's new powers could spell trouble for the three young mermaids who guard Mako Island.
